June 19,2008 - Verdun Board votes to promote beekeeping on national basis.
The Verdun Adventure Bound Board acted last night to endorse and support a request from Boy Scout troop 550 to assist in attempting to revive the Beekeeping Merit Badge.
The Merit Badge was discontinued approximately five years ago due to minimal interest.
Given the local interest in Troop 550 of four youth, and Verduns teaching apiary facility and its annual beekeeping course. It was an easy choice.
This may appear to be a small step in addressing the global bee crisis.
It is hoped that this revival of interest will assist in overcoming the impact of the
declining number of bee hives throughout the world.
Elements of the proposal:
- For BSA, this will be a limited time offering of four to five years. Reviews of participation to be done begining in the third year. Continuation to be based on participation. In order to reduce costs to BSA the proposal will be to put the Merit Badge Pamphlet on the web instead of printing copies. Verdun has agreed to provide the Web space if necessary. The customary local merit badge management processes should remain intact.
- Mrs Ann Harmon, Verdun Board Member and President of the Virginia Beekeepers Association and author will assist by Updating and editing the old Merit Badge Booklet content. Utlizing her network from the beekeeping side we will be asking other state Beekeeping Associtations to assist by making themselves as Merit Badge Counselor Resources.
